Announcing the 2021-22 Hunter Scholar

Kneedler Distinguished Professor of CIS

Congratulations to the 2021-22 Hunter Scholar, Dr. Wingyan Chung. The award was announced during the Faculty Scholarship Celebration, held virtually on March 23, 2021. The Hunter Scholar Award promotes and supports faculty research that builds from and integrates Hunter Library’s resources. The award is jointly sponsored by Hunter Library, the Graduate School and Research, and the Office of the Provost. Dr. Chung was selected for his project Enhancing Organizational Agility by Modeling Business Intelligence from Textual News Data. The project aims to enhance organizational agility in two ways: building domain-specific data collections, and using state-of-the-art machine learning technologies to process news data from selected regional and national businesses.

Dr. Chung is faculty from the College of Business, School of Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, and Business Law and is an information systems scholar with expertise in business analytics, information systems, and more. Dr. Chung worked closely with librarian Alison Cruse to craft an application that exceeded expectations. The project was lauded by the committee for its clear combination of consultation with the appropriate Library Subject Liaison and robust, substantive use of the library’s various collections, including print and electronic materials, data, databases, and Special Collections.

The project aims to (1) develop reusable, annotated data collections of textual news articles about selected businesses, (2) to evaluate the performance of NN language models that will be used to classify and interpret BI factors revealed in these articles, and (3) to contribute to business analytics education and practice in selected North Carolina (NC) regions.

The Hunter Scholar Award Committee consists of Shamella Cromartie, Associate Dean of the Library, Dr. Mark Budden, Dr. Scott Rader, Dr. Melissa Snyder, and previous Hunter Scholar, Dr. Channa de Silva.
