Hunter Library is celebrating International Open Access Week during the week of October 23. To kick off the celebration, Outreach & Scholarly Communication Librarian Scottie Kapel will host a lunch and learn workshop about Creative Commons images on Monday, October 23, 12:15-12:45 p.m. in HL 186. On Wednesday, October 25, Liz Skene and Mark Stoffan will host a data management plan workshop from noon to 12:45 p.m. in HL 186. An exhibit will showcase additional information about open access resources.
The annual event was established by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and student community partners in 2008. According to the event website, “International Open Access Week is an opportunity to take action in making openness the default for research—to raise the visibility of scholarship, accelerate research, and turn breakthroughs into better lives.”
This year’s event theme is “Open in order to…,” focusing on the many ways that open access resources benefit academia and the general public. Nick Shockey, SPARC Director of Programs & Engagement, says “this year’s theme is an invitation to answer the question of what concrete benefits can be realized by making scholarly outputs openly available. “Open in order to…” serves as a prompt to move beyond talking about openness in itself and focus on what openness enables—in an individual discipline, at a particular institution, or in a specific context; then to take action to realize these benefits.”
